Getting
to Thousand Steps beach is not very easy when you try it for the first time.
This beach is designed for the local residents and I think that they like
it being well hidden. From Broadway head east on Coast Highway, the most
prominent landmark is the hospital at about 4 miles down. When you get to
about 4.2 miles look at the street signs on the inland side of Coast Highway.
When you get to 9th street you will want to look for parking. The beach
access point is directly across Coast Highway from 9th street. There is
parking on the north side of Coast Highway and in the streets just above
like 8th and 9th in the residential area. The beach access is very
easy to miss when you're driving past and you might even miss it while looking
right at it. Just park as close to 9th street as you can and walk straight
across Coast Highway from 9th and you run right into the access way. Be
courteous to the residents when parking and careful when crossing Coast
Highway. |

Parking
at Thousand Steps beach is available on the North side of Coast Highway
and along the residential streets on that side. The parking at Thousand
Steps is very limited and if you want to park close to the access area you
need to get there early in the morning or be very lucky. Knowing someone
that has a house in the residential area doesn't hurt either. |

Beach
Access at Thousand Steps Beach is down a very long and steep staircase.
There are actually about 230 something steps but they are very steep. After
coming up these stairs with dive gear you will swear that there aren't a
thousand steps but closer to a million steps. Take it slow and easy and
use the hand rail, especially with dive gear on. |
Facilities |
|
| Facilities
at Thousand steps beach consist of a bathroom, a shower, and a counter top
with a sink and water. This area is at the very bottom of the beach access
staircase so it's rather difficult to miss. There are no telephones on the
beach or at the top entrance to the beach. |
Diving |

Diving
at Thousand Steps beach is both east and west of the staircase. The reef
on the west side (pictured) is large and extends out from the hillside.
Enter the water from the sandy beach and swim out and over to the reef.
There are several reefs on the east side of the beach. This is a beautiful
beach area (some of the beach is private and roped off) and if you can take
the steps is worth several days of exploration. |
